Long after the fighting has stopped, survivors of the Lebanon conflict will be feeling the environmental fallout.: The number of people killed as a result of Israel's offensive in Lebanon at the time of this writing is reported to be roughly 800 Lebanese and 120 Israelis - not an atypical ratio for Arab-Israeli conflicts. The UN estimates the number of displaced persons to be more than a million, about 800,000 of them Lebanese. Damage to infrastructure and the environment will also continue to be felt once hostilities cease. Of course, infrastructure can be rebuilt much more quickly than the environment can be restored or recover on its own. In the case of Lebanon, however, the two are closely linked, as much of the environmental damage comes from destroyed infrastructure . As in most modern wars, oil spills are one of the most visible - and therefore most reported - forms of environmental damage. Until the war started, Lebanon's beaches were among the cleanest in the Mediterranean. They are now to a large extent covered with oil. For a rare species of sea turtle this is bad news,

What first appeared to be a small contamination of a sandy beach in Beirut turned out to be the worst environmental crisis in Lebanon's history, now affecting more than 100km of the Lebanese coast - from Jiyeh in the south to Chekka in the north. And this catastrophe has become regional. Syria has also reported oil hitting its shores, while huge oil carpets now moving slowly towards Turkey may also hit Cyprus and Greece if winds and currents are unfavourable. The UN Environment Programme has labelled this spill as serious as the infamous 1989 Exxon-Valdez incident in Alaska.

• Poland says Russia obstructs Europe's energy plans | Markets | Reuters: Russia's military intervention in Georgia was aimed at obstructing Europe's efforts to cut its reliance on Russian energy resources and diversify its supplies, Poland's president said on Saturday. Lech Kaczynski accused Moscow of using its energy policy to blackmail Europe which depends heavily on oil and gas imports from Russia. Kaczynski said it was in the EU's interests to diversify sources of energy commodities. • Turkey loses $300,000 a day on BTC, exports to resume after repair: "Turkey has lost $300,000 daily during the closure of the Baku-Tbilis-Ce yhan (BTC) pipeline due to an explosion on the line, as oil exports are expected to resume after the repair of the line. BP also shut off the Baku-Supsa oil pipeline and the South Caucasus gas pipeline in Georgia because of the ongoing conflict with Russia. "

• War in the Caucasus: Towards a Broader Russia-US Military Confrontation?: 8/7 Saakashvili ordered an all-out military attack on Tskhinvali. The aerial bombardments and ground attacks were largely directed against civilian targets and residential areas, hospitals and the university. The attacks resulted in some 1500 civilian deaths. "The air and artillery bombardment left the provincial capital without water, food, electricity and gas. Horrified civilians crawled out of the basements into the streets as fighting eased, looking for supplies." ; (AP, 8/9). 34,000 people fled to Russia. The importance and timing of this military operation must be carefully analysed. Georgia is an outpost of US and NATO forces and crossroads of strategic oil and gas pipeline routes.

Georgia's disastrous attack on South Ossetia has given Russia a perfect excuse to roll back US control of Azerbaijan's oil supply: By using force to bring back the breakaway region of South Ossetia under central control, Saakashvili has inadvertently gifted the Kremlin a chance to retrieve the influence it had lost in the Caucasus to the US. Ever since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Russia has watched with growing alarm how the US has violated the promise made by George HW Bush to respect the status quo existing at the time of the end of the cold war in 1990. The eastward expansion of Nato has covered not only the Baltic states, but the now-defunct Warsaw Pact. As if this were not enough, plans are being made to expand Nato to admit Ukraine and Georgia
