A current surge can often cause damage to an electrical device if it is not properly protected. Diode - a solid state electronic component which will allow current to flow in only one direction. The diode is used in applications such as transient suppression, power supply circuits etc. Reed Switch - This is a miniature mechanical switch which changes state when a magnetic field is applied. Resistor - This is an electronic device which simply resists the flow of current.
